Gift inscription to front free endpaper Christmas 1883. Attractive publisher's binding with paper insert surrounded. Brown blemish to six leaves, the worst of which is pictured. Binding sound and hinges secure.

Bookseller's ticket of John Kinloch of Greenock. Heavy foxing to second endpapers front and rear; title page a bit grubby; occasional foxing within. Three stories, illustrated: A Lady's Travels; The Prophet and the Lost City; The Ship and the Island. Hinges a touch slack but binding is sound.

The original slipcase is sturdy and complete without splitting: long ago covered in patterned book-covering paper (similar to thin wallpaper) that appears to be stuck to the slipcase only along fore-edges.

Hence binding is sound. Margins grubby; many small instances of small now-yellowed tape to margins - twice just touching an image and in one case (though unobtrusively) running through it. Two leaves lacking top corner but with no loss to image or text. Redeemed by the superb illustrations.
