1881 New York CATALOGUE of Silverware, Jewelry, Watches, Diamonds. Gorham Manufacturing; Carter, Sloan & Company; American Watch Company of Waltham Mass. [Robbins & Appleton]; Alfred H. Smith & Co.
3 1881 New York CATALOGUE of Silverware, Jewelry, Watches, Diamonds. Gorham Manufacturing; Carter, Sloan & Company; American Watch Company of Waltham Mass. [Robbins & Appleton]; Alfred H. Smith & Co.
Cambridge, MA Riverside Press 1881 Hardcover Very Good 4to.
110 pages. 10.7 x 8.4 inches. A superb 1881 original New York catalogue representing four companies: Gorham Manufacturing Company, Silversmiths. Carter, Sloan & Company, Makers of Gold Jewelry, Bracelets, and Chains. American Watch Company of Waltham Mass. [Robbins & Appleton]. Alfred H. Smith & Co., Diamonds. Each of the four sections has its own title page and is noted as Copyright 1881. Uncommon, no doubt due to the original expense of production and limited number of serious clientele. Worldcat shows only two institutional holdings, both in Special Collections: Brown University and New York Public Libraries. Paper over board. Spine professionally stabilized and rebacked by Peter Gregoroff. New spine and new endpapers; all else original and complete, with small marginal paper repair to page 31/32. Binding is sound; marginal thumbing to a few leaves but overall a remarkably clean interior. No inscriptions. Frontispiece in black and white, to entire catalogue, of stunning Alfred H. Smith & Co. diamond ensemle. Full colour frontispiece of Gorham Sterling Silver Tea Service, tissue guarded. Lithographs of exceptional quality to which my photographs do not do justice. Thereafter numerous illustrations including five lithos for Gorham, two for Carter Sloan, and four brilliant tissue guarded metalic plates for Waltham. The majority of illustrations are in simple black and white. Apart from the ensemble frontispiece the only illustration for the A.H. Smith diamond catalogue is a full-page image of the Kimberly mines.

1896 Easter Ham & Bacon LAING PACKING Montreal Meat Processing Advertisment
5 1896 Easter Ham & Bacon LAING PACKING Montreal Meat Processing Advertisment

A superb piece of butchery memorabilia from the early days of organized meat-processing in Canada. Advertising hams and bacon for the Easter trade, dated March 16th, 1896. Easter Sunday fell less than three weeks later, on the 5th of April. Laing Packing and Provision Co., Montreal: "Anchor Brand". For such a piece of ephemera to survive is uncommon; the high quality of printing, including the use of gold ink for the border and meats, is remarkable. Tipping the ad one sees iridescence in the shining gold not seen in our scan. There are three closed tears: one short to the left and right margin and the other on the right intruding into the right hand ham. The sheet has two horizontal creases. Measures 8.25 x 5.5 inches.
