This copy bound in the more expensive limp vellum. Top edge gilded; ribbon marker intact, all ties secure. Jacket spine with VELLUM 106 handwritten, sunned. Jacket rubbed at head of spine and splitting for an inch from head of spine along upper hinge and from lower right corner up fore-edge. Pictorial bookplate of Gwendolen Jefferson to front pastedown; front pastedown bubbled. light offsetting to first free endpapers from jacket flaps. 4 page Philip Lee Warner catalogue laid in.

Green ribbon remains attached, red silk ribbon laid in [not original as it is wider than the textblock]. Bound by The Knickerbocker Press, with their stamp to turn-in lower left rear. No. 234 of 250 copies on paper [there were an additional 10 copies on vellum]. In very good slipcase, rubbed but not split. Gift inscription dated Xmas 1908 on second free endpaper from J. Kennedy Tod, railwayman and the thirty-sixth President of the St. Andrew's Society of New York.

Ten leaves, in paper covered boards. One of 150 copies bound individually, of 200 printed. Handmade paper; title in red and black with fencing vignette. Harry Elkins Widener [1885 - 1912], young bibliophile, Harvard graduate [and member of their fencing club, perished on the Titanic. This brief homage mentions: "The most popular and appealing story of Widener's death is that as he was about to step into one of the lifeboats he remembered a newly-aquired rare book left in his stateroom and ran back for it, thus sacrificing his place in the boat and his chance of survival" [a second edition of Bacon's Essaies]. The authors have the year of death as 1915; the errata slip is not present in this copy. Light soiling to covers.
