Original 1954 JAN PEERCE Handbill & Program Nova Scotia Opera
7 Original 1954 JAN PEERCE Handbill & Program Nova Scotia Opera
1954
Original handbill, program, and newspaper review of the March 4, 1954 performance of tenor Jan Peerce and pianist Warner Bass at the Queen Elizabeth Auditorium, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Peerce at that time was the leading tenor of the Metropolitan Opera Company. As the review attests: "One of the greatest receptions ever given an artist in Halifax was accorded Jan Peerce... as he was called back for repeated encores for 40 minutes at the conclusion of his concert...last night". An impressive program that included a relatively early performance of Samuel Barber's "Sure On This Shining Night". The handbill measures 8.9 x 5.8 inches, and the program 9 x 7 folded. The handbill is printed on both sides, with the reverse listing endorsements and showing four photos of Peerce in operatic roles. It has two horizontal creases. The program is one sheet folding out to four pages, with rear page blank. It has one horizontal crease, short closed tears and is split along the fold for one inch from head and for 3.5 inches from foot. The glowing newspaper review is complete, with creases, folded in our photo to fit on the scanner.
