Bindings are sound; contents clean and unmarked. For the Thomas Merton connection - he contributed essays (or granted permission) to 2 early Newsletters and the 1973 issue includes a 16 page memoir - see his correspondence with Linda (Parsons) Sabbath in Hidden Ground of Love. Richard Maurice Bucke was born 1837. "He became one of the foremost alienists in America. His appointment as Superintendent of the Provincial Asylum for the Insane at Hamilton, Ontario, and later Professor of Mental and Nervous Diseases at Western University, London, Ontario, provided opportunity for extensive research in a field practically untouched. He became President of the Psychological Section of the British Medical Association and served, also, as President of the American Medico-Psychological Association. He was an original fellow of the Royal Society of Canada." {Beatrice E. Treat, F. R. C.: The Rosicrucian Digest, Nov. 1961}. Bucke and Walt Whitman met for the first time in 1877; each had a high opinion of the other. Bucke described their first meeting in the introduction to his edition of Whitman's "Calamus" (Small Maynard, Boston, 1897) as "a sort of spiritual intoxication" and "the turning-point of my life". For his part, Whitman, who was treated by his friend Bucke, credited him with saving his life and appointed him one of his literary executors. As recorded by Horace Traubel Whitman noted: "someone was here the other day and complained that the Doctor was extreme. The sun's extreme, too; and as for me - ain't I extreme?" and "It's beautiful to watch him at his work - to see how he can handle difficult people with such an easy manner" and "Bucke is a man who enjoys being busy ... is swift of execution, lucid, sure, decisive".
