Published under the direction of the Tract Committee. Binding sound and hinges secure. Front and rear endpapers stained; inscription to front dated 1880. Frontispiece and two full page plates crudely hand-coloured in green. Other illustrations not coloured, including: The Whipping Post For Slaves, Zanzibar. Lower corner crease to final leaves from page 121.

Set of four large linen-backed maps. No stated date of issue. Each measuring 9.2 x 5.5 inches, and folding out to 36.5 x 43 inches. Scale is 3.25 inches to one mile; the plans are divided into half mile squares. Pasted-on paper price strip of 6/- Net. Faint stamp to rear cover of one: Sold by George Philip & Son, Ltd. / 32 Fleet ST. London, and same stamp more boldly in the other three on linen at first fold. Minor soiling to front cover of South-West; minor tideline with bleeding to rear cover left edge of North West [please consult photos for both these issues]; and a few faint drops to rear of South-East. Expected loose strand in places along the cut edges. Interiors clean, with light creasing to South-West and miniscule holes at some fold-intersections. A remarkably well-kept set.

6.7 x 4.7 inches. xi, 305 pages plus six November 1951 yellow revision leaves at rear. A pleasing, clean example: former owner Albert Schatz name to spine, front cover, and first title page. Probably the noted microbiologist and environmentalist of that name, discoverer of the antibiotic streptomycin, of whom, with his wife Vivian Rosenfeld, wikipedia notes: "enthusiastic naturalists and environmentalists and they enjoyed the wilds of Vermont". Military "Important Notice" pasted inside front cover. All eight folding maps present and appear always to have been correctly folded. Unobtrusive pencil underlining on a few leaves only.

No. 433 : Ambleside, Westmoreland ~ Aug. 27, 1842 (general heavy foxing). Book measures 8.7 x 5.25 inches. Binding is sturdy, with original endpapers inked at front (pictured), clear at rear. Each plate has a blank paper leaf guard. Foxing to most plates to varying degree, with a few entirely clean. Please consult the photos for a representative sampling (and by all means request specific photos if interested). It is worth comparing the specific titles in this series with the copy of another issue held at Yale that has 12 views (worldcat); five views in ours are not present in theirs. Our volume does not indicate a publisher or date of issue.

Signature and date to front and rear covers: Robert Wallace Rome January 8 1839. Covers stained and creased. All leaves with at least light soiling, though mostly marginal [not intruding to the image]. Happy to forward more photos. Despite some loss of cloth spine panel binding is secure. No stated date of printing [c. 1895]. Rear cover advertising The Hollywood Hotel and Cottages, with Leon Cottentin as manager and Frederick Hoey proprietor. This is the same Fred Hoey who managed the New York Giants in the 1899 season. "Compliments of Fred Hoey Hollywood, Long Branch, N.J." is written on the rear pastedown. First panel appears to have a successfully repaired tear; overall very good condition.
