16 Cogswell, Henry H. The Statutes at Large, Passed in the Several General Assemblies held in His Majesty's Province of Nova-Scotia : from the sixth session of the eighth General Assembly, which met at Halifax, the twenty-eighth day of November...[ Vol II Supreme Court Horton]
Halifax John Howe and Son 1816 leather Very Good 4to.
xxv, 220 pages [complete]. Full leather, with title in gilt to spine and THE PROTHONOTARY in gilt to front. Contemporary binding is sound and hinges secure. Two blank endpapers at front and at rear. A pleasing example of this second volume of Statutes, especially with this association: Supreme Court, Horton in pen to front cover, and again to front endpaper above: The Office of Prothonotary Clerk of the Crown. "In 1774 an act of the Legislature was passed, first establishing the circuits of the Supreme Court. This act authorised the holding of courts at Horton, Annapolis, and Cumberland, the sittings to last at each place not more than five days, and two judges always to be present." [Eaton: History of Kings County, 160]. Samuel Denison was Prothonotary in 1814, and Samuel Leonard Allison from 1821-1834 [Eaton, 169]. By 1816 the circuit covered the entire mainland and the Supreme Court consisted of five members: Sampson Salter Blowers, Brenton Halliburton, Solicitor General James Stewart, Lewis M. Wilkins Sr. and, exclusively as associate circuit judge, Peleg Wiswall [see chapter 4 by Cahill and Phillips in The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, 1754-2004]. Offsetting to pastedowns and facing endpaper; else remarkably fresh with only moderate staining; no marginalia. Full title: The Statutes at large, passed in the several general assemblies held in His Majesty's province of Nova-Scotia : from the sixth session of the eighth General Assembly, which met at Halifax, the twenty-eighth day of November, in the forty-sixth year of His Majesty's reign, A.D. 1805, being the fifty-fifth session of the General Assembly, to the fifty-sixth year of His Majesty's Reign, inclusive; With an Index. Published by order of the Governor, Council and House of Assembly. Vol II. [The implied Vol. I is Richard Uniacke's Statutes at Large... printed by Howe & Son 1805]
