Former owner's signature to front endpaper dated [19]03; an occasional unobtrusive spot of foxing but overall a remarkably well preserved example of the uncommon first issue of the only work this popular author published in his academic field. A second edition was issued posthumously in 1882. Small old bookseller's stamp at foot of title page: C.C. Morton, Halifax, N.S. " De Mille taught at Acadia from 1860 until 1865, working in the Classics Department. After that, he taught history, literature, and rhetoric at Dalhousie University in Halifax until his death [in 1880]. At the time of his death, he was being considered for the position of Chair of Rhetoric at Harvard College." [Ian Gordon in The New Brunswick Literary Encyclopedia]
