126, [2], 4 pages. Early issue variant in publisher's rust-red cloth with three leaves of SPCK adverts at rear - the first leaf not numbered, thereafter [1]-4. Published under the direction of the Tract Committee. Binding sound and hinges secure. Front and rear endpapers stained; inscription to front dated 1880. Frontispiece and two full page plates crudely hand-coloured in green. Other illustrations not coloured, including: The Whipping Post For Slaves, Zanzibar. Lower corner crease to final leaves from page 121.

Grey endpapers, two blank white leaves, half title, tissue guarded frontispiece, title page, Phillips Brooks quotation, 15 paginated pages, Arthur Hugh Clough quotation, blanks as at front. The Brooks>Page 1 leaves are uncut. Merrymount watermark to paper. No inscriptions. Slight nick to fore-edge of page 5, else fine in chipped glassine wrapper. Apart from the aforementioned quotations, the text consists of two parts: a condensation of obituary notices and "An Appreciation of" RWA by his Pastor, Rev. Spencer E. Evans.

Harry Elkins Widener [1885 - 1912], young bibliophile, Harvard graduate [and member of their fencing club, perished on the Titanic. This brief homage mentions: "The most popular and appealing story of Widener's death is that as he was about to step into one of the lifeboats he remembered a newly-aquired rare book left in his stateroom and ran back for it, thus sacrificing his place in the boat and his chance of survival" [a second edition of Bacon's Essaies]. The authors have the year of death as 1915; the errata slip is not present in this copy. Light soiling to covers.

Dampstain to lower corner of first 3 of four illustration plates (including frontis. and title page). Brief pencil notation and scoring throughout, but not in abundance. Binding is sound. Spine somewhat darker than boards, with paper label chipped and cracking.

A tidy early example of this seminal work.
