222 pages. Third printing [stated on jacket] of the first edition. Jacket spine tanned and chipped at head. Verso of jacket reinforced along edges with brown paper tape. Jacket is complete and stable, thogh splitting along upper hinge. E. Schoeller signed engraved bookplate 1903 of Olga E. Schoeller to front endpaper and, facing that, a pasted-in photo of a small girl with ponies. Despite the relatively well preserved jacket and handsome front cover, the interior is rough: frontispiece is secured fore and aft to gutter with brown paper tape; binding is entirely split between pages 136 and 137; the gathering of pages 137-152 is detached; pages 153 to end are securely bound together though detached as a whole. Foxing throughout. All pages are present, including the four illustrated plates and blank endpapers; there is a picture of windy sand-dunes affixed to verso of rear endpaper. Loosely inserted in the volume are four newspaper clipping dealing with Shetland ponies from unidentified German papers. We are fortunate to have a local conservator and we would be happy to organize restoration of this volume at cost.
