Seventh Edition ~ Revised and Corrected. 7.8 x 5 inches. 225 pages plus four pages of Groom ads at rear. A pleasing example of this working copy of the young Robert C. Adams in his first year of seamanship. Signed and dated by him on front endpaper November 1855, on the ship Ringleader {one of the Glidden & Williams Line}. Adams, the son of Rev. Nehemiah Adams of Boston, was too ill to study preaching so at age 15 took to the sea and would become "commander of some of the finest merchant vessels in the American marine service" [Blue Grass Blade issue]. Adams was also later known as a published and vocal proponent for Freethought, and served as Head of the Montreal Freethought Club and President of the Canadian Secular Union. He published many articles; his books included: "Travels in Faith" and the East Indian seafaring novel "On Board The Rocket". A point-form list of accomplishments in an old hand is laid in to the volume: "Robert C. Adams / Sea Captain / Mining Speculator / Sup'd Cross Mission Sabbath School / Head of Freethought Club in Montreal / Born in Boston / Lived in Montreal / Died in Boston / Father was a Congregational Minister / Taught a Sunday School Class in Zion Church." Brown cloth with gilt titles and ship design to front. Spine panel chipped at head and foot and split along rear gutter midway down. Binding and hinges are fully secure with no wobble. Original endpapers present and secure. Marginal chipping to a few pages not affecting text. Plates ii and iii are missing; the other three plates and all pages are present and securely bound.
