127 paginated leaves with text on recto only, with two preliminary leaves. Foolscap folio [8.5 x 13.5 inches] with comb binding and black card covers. This is a Draft edition of what would become No Retreating Footsteps, see the letter of J.W. Douglas at front: "Dr. Will R. Bird has written a rough draft of the History using the material he has gathered to date. This draft is not complete and is not written in final form. Part of it is enclosed for your: - Corrections ... Additions ... Comments ... And Return Please will everybody who gets a copy of this draft make the corrections, additions, and comments and return it to him at once, THIS WEEK. He has done a wonderful job collecting material. The least we can do is to help him in this way to make his book accurate, complete and popular. His address is... ". Please note: this volume is surely a later copy of an original copy of the circulated draft - the leaves are photocopied [a process not in use in the early 50s] and the comb-back seems more modern. The first leaf is a photocopy of a wrinkled leaf on which "Col. Rhodenizer / War Diary of the N.N.S. Highlanders" was written. This item came to us as-is, and we have not made a copy of it. There are no corrections, additions, or any inscriptions photocopied or original. No maps or illustrations; no chapter divisions [though page one is headed: "The Adventure"], no index. I have estimated the date of the original copy to 1953, a year before the first issue of No Retreating Footsteps, but no date appears on the document or cover leaves.
