A remarkably early Solon Robinson piece consisting of his inscriptions in An Agricultural and Economical Almanack For The Year Of Our Lord 1818. [Elijah Middlebrook. New Haven, Conn.: Maltby, Goldsmith & Co.] This constitutes evidence of his hitherto rumoured earliest days of peddling, before rising to prominence in Indiana. He would have been 14 yrs old in Jan. 1818. The inscriptions, in order of placement in the almanac are as follows: "Capt. Eliphalet Hendee [illeg.] Andover Society Tolland County Jan 25th 1818" / "Maltby Goldsmith and Co keeps constantly on hand all kinds books which they will sell for cash on the lowest terms NB all pedlars supplied on the shortest Notice" / "NB the highest prise in the Trainfield Lottery is three thousand Dollars. Written for the benefit of Amelia Babcock Coventry January 2nd 1820 Solon Robinson. This is to certyfy [?sic] that the above writing is of no use to any one. Solon Rb" [squiggled] [Amelia Babcock was the wife of Capt. Eliphalet Hendee; as residents of Tolland they would have known Robinson also of Tolland] / "Solon Robinson Pedlar and Hawker and petty Chapman A native of Tolland A resident of Saybrook old Society Oyster River Village one mile from the platform State of Connecicut [sic] S" / "Solon Robinson Coventry Jan 2nd A 1820 Andover [At Mile R ?] Mansfield Conn" / Brief notation to otherwise blank leaf: S B16818 Nov / Finally and fittingly considering his future in agriculture, his notation beneath the printed notice of frequent complaints of bad vegetables which a little care would prevent: "I believe it". Almanc in fair condition only with edges tanned and brittle, corners curled. The last complete page is 32, with only the upper portion of pp. 33-36 remaining [of 36]. Side and saddle sewn binding is sound.
